Alan Whitehead

Alan was born in Manchester England and was taught to play by his father.

Other teachers were Albert Risby and Harold Hall at the Manchester School of Music.

He played in the Ancoats lads club band, the Victoria Hall band, the Beswick Prize band, The Central Manchester band and the Clayton Aniline band.

Following some time employed as a Cinema projectionist he decided to make music his career and joined the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 1956.

He has had 41 distinguished years in the CBSO most of which were as principal trumpet. He retired from the orchestra in 1997 but continues to play whenever he is asked with orchestras throughout Britain.

In 1999 the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra marked Alan's distinguished career by naming the players green room at the newly opened CBSO centre the 'Alan Whitehead room'
